Welcome! Here are a few notes that may add to your understanding of my work.

The Galleries
These galleries contain samples of my work from the past 20 some years. The WeatherWorks series consist of about 20 or so drawings, 5 of which are included here. Similarly, the other galleries are samples taken from series. The series “WeatherWorks” that you see in the first gallery grew out of my work at Claremont Graduate University where I received an MFA. After that, each piece or series connected to the next. I usually like to work in series so I can more fully explore the ideas and techniques. My media is determined by what the image and concept so I may use watercolor, oil, or dry media depending on what seems to be the best solution. In viewing the work on computers, it is difficult to know if the colors and light are correct. On my computer which is a PC I have set the target gamma adjustment at 1.32.

The Work
The theme of nature pervades my work. I incorporate images, textures, colors, and feelings that are evoked from the natural world. As human beings we have the capacity to experience our surroundings in a way that transcends the physical. We connect these objects whether they are rocks, sunlight, or water to our internal response to them —emotions, thoughts, and sensations. Perhaps these expressions of my own response to such elemental and essential parts of the earth may encourage the viewer to experience moments more deeply. These instants—specific, fleeting seconds that are stilled by the form of art are a form of meditation. The interchange of my response to nature, creating the imagery, and then your response forms this dialogue of art. My hope is that this art will enrich your life.

A note about myself
I was born and grew up in Northern California and am a third generation of Japanese descent or sansei. I taught art briefly and then have worked mostly as a studio painter. My family and I reside in Sacramento.

Although much of the work is meditative and introspective, I am also concerned with humanitarian and social issues. As a result I have begun to do some activism more publicly and during the past year 2002-3 have formed a group called Peace Arts Xchange. You can learn about our work at the website peacearts.net.
